Ferris wheel on Podil in Kyiv is being checked after cable broke on cable car
This was reported by Iryna Vynokurova, a spokeswoman for the Kyiv Prosecutor's Office, in a comment to Ukrinform.
"As part of the criminal proceedings initiated under Article 272 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - violation of safety rules during the performance of high-risk work - the operation of the Ferris Wheel attraction in the Podil district is being checked," Vynokurova said.
According to Vynokurova, the police have requested all the permits for the attraction.
The spokeswoman noted that the proceedings are factual, as law enforcement agencies cannot conduct an inspection without them. According to Vynokurova, it is too early to talk about the results of the inspection.
Ukrinform also called the phone number listed on the Ferris Wheel website. A woman named Alina picked up the phone and introduced herself as the wife of the owner of the attraction, a French citizen named Louis Toutin.
According to her, they had provided the police with the permits for the attraction that law enforcement officers had requested.
"I have already provided all the documents to the police. If we have been here for seven years, then we probably have everything," said the wife of the attraction's owner.
The Ferris wheel was brought from France and installed in Podil in 2017.
On 21 July, a cable broke on an amusement ride across the Dnipro River in Kyiv. A young man died as a result of the fall.
The Kyiv City State Administration said it would demand a thorough investigation of both the emergency and the activities of the company operating the ride.
Investigators opened a case under two articles of the Criminal Code, including negligence that led to the death of a person.
At the time, the Kyiv Prosecutor's Office reported that in 2021, they tried to stop the operation of the "rope crossing over the Dnipro". A lawsuit was initiated to do so.
