Zaporizhzhia region launches construction of ‘underground schools’

Ivan Fedorov, head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, announced this on Telegram, Ukrinform reports.

"I held an offsite meeting to discuss the construction of 'underground schools' - shelters. Our global goal is to give 50,000 pupils in the Zaporizhzhia region the opportunity to study offline. We are implementing it [the project] in collaboration with the city authorities," the post reads.

Given all the risks of the frontline area, the Zaporizhzhia Regional Defense Council decided that the entire educational process should take place in shelters. Construction has commenced at five locations.

"Today, I conducted an inspection of the construction of a shelter for the Sich Collegium specialized school. The work started more than a week ago. We expect that the school will be operational on two shifts, with a capacity of 1,000 students. The construction cost is over UAH 112 million. The facility is scheduled for commissioning in the fourth quarter of 2024. It is a challenging endeavor. Zaporizhzhia has never previously attempted such a large-scale project in such a short time frame. Nevertheless, we make every effort to complete the project in the shortest feasible time and with the utmost quality," said Fedorov.

As Ukrinform reported, Russians shelled enterprises and residential buildings in the Nikopol district.
