Restoring nuclear energy in Ukraine makes sense as part of wider efforts - Pritzker

In the short term, restoring Ukraine's nuclear power following Russian attacks makes sense as part of other partner efforts.

This was stated by the U.S. special envoy for Ukraine’s economic recovery Penny Pritzker, who spoke at a briefing in Kyiv, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

She recalled that nuclear energy today accounts for 50% of Ukraine's power supply, which cannot be ignored.

Pritzker emphasized that the U.S. and allies are making efforts to help address energy shortages caused by the massive Russian attacks that began in March. According to the official, the government of Ukraine should determine in the long term how it decides to produce its electricity.

In the short term, however, she went on to say, restoring nuclear power and exploring wells makes sense in addition to all the other efforts that Ukraine’s allies are driving, the special representative believes.

As reported, Energy Minister German Galushchenko of Ukraine said that two nuclear power units will be completed and two new AR1000 reactors will be installed at the Khmelnytskyi NPP, making the plant Europe’s largest. He also expects the third power unit to be built within nearly three years.
