Japan hands Ukraine $235M to support education, private sector

Ukraine has received $235 million in concessional financing from the Government of Japan within the framework of two new World Bank projects to support education and the private sector.

This was reported by the Ministry of Finance, Ukrinform saw.

“The State Budget of Ukraine has received $235 million in concessional financing from the Government of Japan within the framework of the new systemic projects of the World Bank – on sustainable, inclusive and environmentally balanced entrepreneurship” (RISE) and on enhancing accessibility and resilience of education amid crisis in Ukraine (LEARN),” the statement says.

It is noted that under the RISE project, Ukraine received $130 million in loans to support the private sector. Another $105 million is received within the framework of the LEARN project to ensure safe in-person learning in schools, in particular for setting up shelters and purchase of school buses in 2024.

"Budget support from Japan attracted through the Bank's facilities has reached about $6 billion since February 2022," said Finance Minister Serhii Marchenko.

In addition, by the end of 2024, Ukraine expects to attract an additional $120 million under the RISE project and $95 million under the LEARN project.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, on November 27, 2024, Ukraine received $4.8 billion from the World Bank within the framework of the PEACE project to support the implementation of reforms, the social and educational sectors, healthcare, agricultural producers, as well as recovery projects.
