Russians destroy mosaic panel at Mariupol train station
In the temporarily occupied Mariupol, the invaders destroyed the mosaic panel "Metallurgists" at the railway station, which was exhibited at the UN headquarters.
The Mariupol City Council reported this on Telegram, Ukrinform reports.
"Currently, the occupation authorities continue to dismantle the remains of the railway station building, and with it - an important monumental artwork. The Metallurgists panel and the building of the Mariupol railway station itself were severely damaged as a result of Russian military aggression in 2022," the statement said.
As noted, the panel "Metallurgists" was created in 1974 by the famous Mariupol monumentalists Valentyn Konstantinov and Lel Kuzminkov and decorated the lounge of the railway station. In June 2019, the Metallurgists mosaic was exhibited at the United Nations Headquarters in New York as part of the Carved in Smalto exhibition: Ukrainian Monumental Art of 1960-1980.
As reported earlier, masterpieces of monumentalism - mosaics by Ukrainian artist and dissident Alla Horska - were destroyed in Mariupol as a result of Russian shelling.
The invaders took all the valuable exhibits from the local Museum of Local Lore and the Kuindzhi Art Museum.
