Zelensky meets with U.S. Senate delegation
The visit of the U.S. Senate delegation sends a strong signal of bipartisan support for Ukraine from both Congress and the American people.
President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote about this on Facebook, Ukrinform reports.
"The visit of the U.S. Senate delegation led by the head of the Republican minority in the upper house of Congress, Mitchell McConnell, sends a strong signal of bipartisan support for Ukraine by the United States Congress and the American people. Thank you for your leadership in helping us in our fight not only for our country but also for democratic values and freedoms. We really appreciate that," Zelensky said.
According to the President's press service, during a meeting with the Senate delegation, Zelensky noted the special role the United States plays in increasing sanctions pressure on Russia. In particular, he stressed the recently passed legislation banning the import of Russian oil and suspension of trade relations with Russia and Belarus.
According to the president, it is also especially important to increase sanctions pressure on the banking sector of the aggressor power.
"I look forward to the United States' support for further sanctions. In addition, we believe that Russia should be officially recognized as a state sponsor of terrorism," said Zelensky.
He thanked the United States for its leadership in supporting Ukraine. The president called “significant” the entry into force of the Lend-Lease Act.
Zelensky also expressed hope that the U.S. Senate will promptly approve a package of additional funding to support the Ukrainian people, which has already been considered in the House of Representatives, laying down aid that increased from $33 billion to $39.6 billion.
A delegation from the upper house of U.S. Congress, led by Senate Republican Minority Leader Mitchell McConnell, is visiting Ukraine on May 14.
As Ukrinform reported earlier, on May 10, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill allocating about $40 billion to respond to the Russian Federation's aggression against Ukraine.
