Expert: Ukraine can explain to US vice-presidential candidate Vance how to end war

Exclusive

The position of Senator J.D. Vance is not so categorical, so Ukraine can find an approach to a possible candidate for vice president of the United States.

This opinion was expressed by Maksym Skrypchenko, President of the Centre for Transatlantic Dialogue, in a commentary to Ukrinform.

"Despite all the criticism of Vance's position on Ukraine, in private conversations, things are not quite so categorical. The vice presidential candidate has his own alternative way of thinking, which we just need to understand. For example, J.D. Vance has experienced what war is like, so he believes that helping Ukraine means ending the war at any cost. All Kyiv has to do is explain that the war cannot be stopped by our desire alone," Skrypchenko said.

In his opinion, candidates for political office in the United States often change their position after they hold office and are informed at the highest level. This may also apply to Vance in the future. As an example, the expert cites House Speaker Michael Johnson, who initially opposed providing aid to Ukraine, and then not only put it to a vote, but also demanded that the aid package include extended-range ATACMS missiles.

In addition, the expert believes that the position of US presidential candidate Donald Trump can be influenced through his entourage, including Vance, but it should be understood that the final decision is always made by the former US president himself and it can be completely unexpected. "The issue of the Russian-Ukrainian war is too important and historic to be completely entrusted to J.D. Vance, so we should take into account Trump's personal involvement after the advisers have developed a basic strategy towards Ukraine," he stressed.

As Ukrinform reported, the National Convention of the US Republican Party is taking place this week in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Its delegates supported Donald Trump's candidacy to continue representing the party in the presidential election. In turn, Trump announced that he had chosen a young senator, J.D. Vance, to be his vice-presidential running mate in the US elections.

J.D. Vance is known for his loud statements against Ukraine. For example, he strongly opposed the US military assistance to Kyiv. Vance also admitted that Ukraine may have to cede territory to end the war with Russia.
