Since war-start, over 220,000 Ukrainians arrive in Canada

Since the beginning of 2022, more than 220,000 Ukrainians have arrived in Canada, of which nearly 15% came from the USA.

That’s according to a report by Canada’s Border Services Agency, seen by an Ukrinform correspondent.

It is noted that more than 190,000 Ukrainians arrived in Canada by air and more than 29,000 – by land transport. However, this number includes not only newly arrived Ukrainians but also Ukrainian nationals who, even before Russia’s full-scale invasion, received permission for long-term residence in Canada.

At the same time, since March 17 last year, when Canada announced new temporary migration programs for Ukrainians allowing them to live and work in the country for three years, more than 1 million Ukrainians have applied for such visas, and more than 707,000 such visas have already been issued.

There is currently no record of exactly how many holders of these visas eventually arrived in Canada.

It should be recalled that, since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the federal and provincial governments of Canada set up more than 10 charter flights to bring Ukrainians from Europe to various regions of Canada free of charge. Upon arrival, displaced Ukrainians are provided with financial support and two weeks of free accommodation.
