British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said on Friday the country had joined a group of international partners pursuing criminal accountability for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

That’s according to Reuters, Ukrinform reports.

The UK government said in a statement it had been invited by Ukraine to join the group and encouraged other G7 nations to also take part.

"These atrocities must not go unpunished," British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said, citing the deaths of soldiers and civilians and the displacement of millions of Ukrainians.

It is noted that Britain's participation will involve an assessment of the possibility of creating a new "hybrid" tribunal, a specialized court integrated into the national justice system of Ukraine with international elements to it.

The inquiry into the crime of aggression could complement the established mechanisms of investigating war crimes, including the International Criminal Court and the internal legal process of Ukraine. Together, these parallel processes will help ensure that all crimes are fully investigated and those responsible – brought to justice, according to Cleverly.

As reported by Ukrinform, the European Parliament on Thursday by a majority of votes adopted a resolution in support of the action to establish an international tribunal to hold accountable all those guilty of the crime of aggression against Ukraine.
