US House of Representatives passes NDAA with $300M in aid for Ukraine
As the Voice of America reports, the House of Representatives was sitting until almost midnight considering 200 amendments. The Republicans managed to secure the approval of a number of proposals, while five amendments, which demanded to reduce or completely stop aid to Ukraine, did not gain votes.
"In particular, the amendment of Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene, who demanded to remove $300 million for Ukraine from the defense budget, was rejected with 89 votes for and 358 against. The amendment of Republican Matt Gaetz, who demanded the cancellation of all security assistance to Ukraine, also failed," reads the article.
It is emphasized that $300 million has been budgeted for the continuation of security assistance to Ukraine in 2024 both in the draft defense budget of the House of Representatives and in the corresponding draft of the Senate. This is equal to the amount requested by the Biden administration, but at the same time, it is 500 million less compared to what was agreed last year.
This year, Democrat Jared Golden tried to introduce an amendment to increase the proposed aid to Ukraine in the 2024 NDAA by $500 million, so that the final amount would match last year's. But this proposal did not pass the House Armed Services Committee.
At the same time, the full version of the NDAA, whose amendments are still being considered, contains the proposal of Republican Matt Gaetz for an additional special inspector to check the aid coming to Ukraine.
Senate will consider the defense budget on Tuesday, July 18.
As reported, on July 7, the U.S. Department of Defense officially announced a new $800 million security assistance package to Ukraine. The package contains cluster munitions and other types of weapons and ammunition for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
