Ukrainian lawmakers are discussing initiatives to strengthen the responsibility of military commanders whose actions and orders led to the death of military personnel, theft of property and other grave consequences.

MP Ruslan Horbenko, deputy chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights, said this in an interview with Ukrinform.

"We often raise questions about the responsibility of commanders. [...] In my opinion, it is necessary to review the legislation on the prosecution of military commanders," he said.

According to him, as long as the state does not punish those whose orders led to, for example, the death of military personnel, the theft of brigade property, or the obtaining of illegal benefits, service members will not be motivated to perform their duties.

"To win the war, we need to be more careful with the selection of commanders of brigades, battalions, etc., including increasing the level of their training for the position," he said.

Horbenko emphasized that the Ukrainian army lacks experienced commanders "who really cheer for the combat effectiveness of their military unit, their brigade or battalion and improve it."
