SBU detains Russian spy helping enemy prepare another air strike on Kharkiv
That’s according to the SBU press service, Ukrinform reports.
The enemy accomplice turned out to be a local resident who was part of the intelligence network set up by Russia’s defense intelligence, better known as the GRU.
The culprit came to the attention of the Russian special services through his publications on social media, made after the start of the full-scale invasion.
In order to fulfill the enemy's task, the suspect would travel around Kharkiv and secretly record the locations of the Ukrainian military bases. He would also record the coordinates of railway junctions where military equipment and ammunition are unloaded.
During his forays, the enemy agent also tried to figure out operation peculiarities of strategic industrial facilities, including local aviation companies.
The SBU operatives nabbed the perpetrator red-handed outside one of such industrial facilities in Kharkiv, where he was conducting reconnaissance.
During the search at the suspect’s home, law enforcers seized mobile phones and computer equipment he had been using to keep in touch with his handlers.
The SBU pressed charges against the suspect under Art. 111 Part 2 (treason committed under martial law) of the Criminal Code.
The court ruled to remand the suspect in custody. He is facing life in prison if proven guilty.
An investigation is ongoing to establish all the circumstances of the crime.
As Ukrinform reported earlier, the SBU counter-intelligence detained a Russian asset who left Donetsk region for Kyiv to spy for Russia by exposing the defense network set up in the region.
