NBU: UAH 685B worth of cash in circulation as of early April
That’s according to a report by the National Bank of Ukraine, Ukrinform reports.
"UAH 685 billion is the total amount of cash in circulation in Ukraine on April 1, 2022," the statement said.
In particular, this is almost 3.1 billion banknotes totaling UAH 679.8 billion, as well as almost 14.1 billion coins (excluding commemorative and investment) in the amount of UAH 5.09 billion. This is UAH 57.4 billion, or 9.2% more than in early 2022 (as of January 1, 2022, it was UAH 627.6 billion).
The growth is due to increased demand for cash, which was observed due to uncertainty at the onset of war, the NBU explained.
At the same time, while a significant demand for cash was observed in the first weeks of war, in the second half of March cash withdrawal from circulation began. In March, the amount of cash in circulation grew by only 2.8% (or UAH 18.7 billion).
The National Bank notes that there were 74 banknotes and 166 payment and circulation coins per capita of Ukraine (as of January 1, 2022, it was 71 and 162, respectively).
As Ukrinform reported, as of January 1, 2022, UAH 627.6 billion worth of cash was in circulation. As of January 1, 2021, it was UAH 558.5 billion. As of January 1, 2020, it was UAH 425 billion, and as of January 1, 2019, it was UAH 400.1 billion.
