Ukraine yet to see nuclear engineering report following IAEA visit to ZNPP - Podolyak
That’s according to Mykhailo Podolyak, an advisor to the head of the Ukrainian President's Office, who addressed the issue at a national telethon, Ukrinform reports.
"There should be a certain number of people who understand nuclear physics and engineering technologies. They can be there, I emphasize, next to our staffers," Podolyak said, adding that currently the Ukrainian side does not have clear data on whether everything is normal at the facility in terms of safety circuits, reactor cooling, and personnel.
"We saw nothing of that in the report," Podolyak noted.
Commenting on the IAEA initiative to set up permanent presence of its experts at the ZNPP, he also noted that, despite the above, such presence at the nuclear plant might help protect Ukrainian personnel from armed invaders.
"That’s because those Russian troops there have no clue about what is happening there so they can’t assess the risks correctly. But there are a certain number of our staffers who need some kind of protection, so that someone from the international community stands by their side – some inspectors who will say ‘don't touch these people, let them do their job.’ This would be important," the government official emphasized.
As reported, Power Unit 5 of the Zaporizhia NPP was disconnected on the morning of September 1, but it was later reconnected to the power grid.
As reported, the mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) led by its head Rafael Grossi arrived in Ukraine and on September 1 visited the Zaporizhia NPP.
Six experts with the International Atomic Energy Agency remained at the Zaporizhia NPP after their mission visited the facility on Thursday; in the future, two representatives of the Agency will constantly work at the plant.
The ZNPP, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, has been captured by the Russian military on March 4. Since then the invaders have been deploying military equipment and ammunition on the site of the station, as well as shelling the surrounding area.
The United Nations, the United States, and Ukraine have called on the Russian Federation to withdraw military equipment and personnel from the nuclear facility.
