Ukraine preparing to start exporting electricity to Slovakia

Ukraine plans to start exporting electricity to Slovakia in the coming days.

That’s according to Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, CEO NEC Ukrenergo, who broke the news at the national telethon, Ukrinform reports.

"Today there is a surplus of electricity in our power system. Currently, electricity is being exported to Poland and Moldova. And we are also preparing to open a third destination – Slovakia. I hope this decision will be made by our Slovak colleagues in the coming days," Kudrytskyi said.

He said the money made off exports is a resource the power system needs to partially finance the recovery ahead of the next heating season.

"Ukraine should take its place on the European energy market after the unification of power systems. Ukraine should become one of the key suppliers of clean, cheap energy to the European market," added Kudrytskyi.

As reported, Ukraine began exporting electricity to Europe late June 2022. In October, exports were suspended after Russian missiles and drones started massively targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

After the situation stabilized, the parties began discussing the issue of resuming the supply of electricity to Europe. On April 7, Energy Minister German Galushchenko signed an executive document green-lighting the process of resuming electricity exports if the power system sees a generating capacity surplus.
