EBRD to provide €25 million to restore water supply in Mykolaiv
This was announced by Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych on Facebook, Ukrinform reports.
“Today we signed a significant agreement between Mykolaivvodokanal and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to provide almost €25 million to restore water supply to our city,” Sienkevych wrote.
He also noted that the main elements of the city's existing water supply and sewage system have already reached the end of their service life. Also, due to the military aggression by the Russian Federation, Mykolaiv's water supply and sewage infrastructure was largely destroyed.
According to him, this is expected to increase the reliability of the city's water supply and sewage infrastructure, improve the quality of centralized water supply services, reduce water losses in the city's distribution networks, and increase the energy efficiency of the company.
The total estimated cost of the project is €33 million, of which €10 million is a loan from the EBRD, €5 million is a grant from the Eastern European Partnership Energy Efficiency and Environment Facility, €9.8 million is a grant from the EBRD Special Crisis Response Fund, and €8.2 million is a subvention from the state budget of Ukraine for the restoration of the Dnipro-Mykolaiv water intake facilities.
The mayor also noted that the project does not require any funds from the budget of the Mykolaiv city territorial community.
As reported, the drinking water in the taps of Mykolaiv residents disappeared on April 12, 2022, due to the Dnipro-Mykolaiv water pipeline being cut off by Russian invaders. Since then, only technical salt water has been flowing there, which is spoiling the water supply system.
