Ukraine ready to resume air traffic as soon as it becomes safe – official
Ukraine's Deputy Minister for Communities and Territories Development Serhii Derkach stated this during the conference "Europe - Poland - Ukraine: Cooperate Together’26," an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
According to the official, all relevant services are actively working to prepare for the resumption of civil aviation flights.
"It is clear that there are currently enormous risks that unfortunately do not allow the airspace to be opened. However, we are focused on preserving airports and airport infrastructure. I would like to remind you that there are two state-owned airports – Lviv and Boryspil. We are working to ensure they are ready to reopen the next day once the security situation allows it," Derkach said.
He also noted that in addition to maintaining infrastructure, efforts are being made to preserve aviation teams and certified specialists, as they cannot be trained in a single day.
"At the same time, we have developed an Aviation Development Strategy for the coming years. It includes a clear plan for how we will open the airspace and develop infrastructure. It also provides opportunities for public-private partnerships and concessions for airports or parts of them. Therefore, I am convinced this area will also be very attractive for private investors," Derkach said.
In March 2026, the Cabinet of Ministers created a working group to prepare for the restoration of Ukraine's airport operations. It coordinates all stakeholders involved in the process of reopening airspace. During the period of suspended air traffic, its priorities are maintaining airport infrastructure and ensuring the ability to quickly resume flights once the security situation allows.
