Ukraine condemns parliamentary elections in occupied territory of Georgia

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine condemns holding of the parliamentary elections on June 9 in Tskhinvali region of Georgia, occupied by the Russian Federation, and does not recognize the voting results.

"Ukraine regards this step as another attempt of Russia and its occupying regime to legitimize the situation in this occupied territory of Georgia, including as a result of ‘ethnic cleansing’ and other numerous systematic gross violations of human rights," reads the Ministry’s statement.

The Foreign Ministry underscores that Ukraine supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and the peaceful attempts of the Georgian government to reconcile Georgians with Ossetians, including the “Step to Better Future” initiative.

As reported, the territory of Tskhinvali region and Abkhazia were officially declared the occupied territory of Georgia after the hostilities between Russia and Georgia in August 2008, which ended with Moscow’s recognition of self-proclaimed states of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
