EU ratifies Istanbul Convention

The European Union has ratified the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (Istanbul Convention).

Secretary General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejčinović Burić said this on Twitter, Ukrinform reports.

"I welcome today’s ratification by the EU of the Council of Europe. Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, known as “Istanbul Convention”: a very good day for Europe," Marija Pejčinović Burić wrote.

As reported, the Istanbul Convention entered into force in April 2014. The EU signed it on June 13, 2017. The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine ratified the Istanbul Convention on June 20, 2022.

On June 1, the EU Council decided to join the Istanbul Convention.
