Zelensky claims peace talks going to be very difficult
President Volodymyr Zelensky mentioned this during his communication with journalists at the Munich Security Conference.
Zelensky explained that while there may be talks occurring on various levels, the situation has significantly shifted. He pointed out that Russia has never faced total political isolation, even under previous administrations, including that of former U.S. President Trump. He underlined the importance of honesty in recognizing that Russia continues to pursue its interests, and Ukraine is determined to protect its rights.
"The United States wants a victory, the Russians are desperate for it, and Ukraine deserves it. So, it will be very difficult," Zelensky stated. He further explained that any talks will revolve around issues that belong to Ukraine, and therefore, the negotiations will not be easy.
He also expressed Ukraine's desire for security guarantees from the United States, which he believes would be essential moving forward, including the potential use of U.S. or European contingents for peacekeeping operations. However, Zelensky emphasized that if Ukraine had the necessary military equipment, such as F-16s and Patriot systems, it would be able to operate independently without external command.
Additionally, Zelensky noted the importance of involving European partners in any peace process. For Ukraine, any peace talks must include its direct participation, as well as the involvement of the European Union and other key allies, especially in discussions regarding long-term security and future guarantees.
As reported by Ukrinform, U.S. President Donald Trump believes that Ukraine should have a permanent seat at the negotiating table regarding the end of the war initiated by Russia.
Earlier, Trump avoided answering the question of whether Ukraine should be a full participant in the negotiations to end the Russian war. After that, Zelensky stated that Ukraine would not accept any bilateral peace talks without its participation. Furthermore, it is important for Ukraine that European partners are also present at the negotiating table.
