The United States wants to achieve a lasting and durable peace in Ukraine, not the kind of peace that will lead to conflict in a few years.

This was stated by US Vice President JD Vance following a meeting with the Ukrainian delegation led by President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“We had a number of fruitful conversations, a number of things for us to follow up and work on. And fundamentally, the goal is, as President Trump outlined it, we want the war to come to a close. We want the killing to stop, but we want to achieve a durable, lasting peace, not the kind of peace that's going to have Eastern Europe in conflict just a couple years down the road,” said Vance.

He added that the parties had “a number of good conversations” on how to achieve peace, and many more discussions will take place in “the days, weeks and months to come”.

The Ukrainian President, for his part, said it was “a good conversation” and noted: “We need to speak more, to work more, and to prepare the plan how to stop Putin and finish the war.”

Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine wants peace very much, but needs real security guarantees and will continue meetings and work on this issue.

The meeting was also attended by the heads of the foreign ministries and defense ministries of both countries.

As reported, the Munich Security Conference is taking place on February 14-16.
