There must be accountability for ceasefire violations – UK Ambassador
This view was expressed by the British Ambassador to Ukraine, Martin Harris, in an interview with Ukrinform.
"There’s one question, which is about how you monitor a ceasefire. And that needs to be given careful consideration to ensure that any violations of a ceasefire have consequences, and that it’s very clear, if there are provocations as we’ve seen before and a ceasefire is broken, who is responsible for those," Harris emphasized.
According to the Ambassador, the primary goal of security guarantees is to prevent another Russian attack.
"What we’re discussing at the moment among a Coalition of the willing is a different element of this, which is how you ensure that Ukraine’s security is strengthened and is provided for in the future so that Russia will not attack again. That is underpinning Ukraine’s security," the diplomat stressed.
He declined to comment on reports suggesting that British Special Operations Forces had allegedly been put on combat readiness amid discussions about the possibility of sending an international military contingent to Ukraine.
The Ambassador mentioned that the issue of deploying British and other troops is being considered now. “We’ve made clear that we would deploy them to Ukraine in the event of a peace deal to ensure that you have that element, too, to strengthen Ukraine’s security," he said.
According to the British Ambassador, the specific method of deployment is currently being discussed by military planners in the UK.
As reported, on March 27, following a meeting of country leaders on aid to Ukraine, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the potential deployment of British troops to Ukraine could eventually be put to a vote in Parliament.
At the same time, he emphasized that any potential deployment of a Western contingent to Ukraine would require US involvement.
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that a Franco-British group of military personnel would head to Ukraine to work on a framework for training the Ukrainian military in the future.
