Ukrinform
President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed off a law prohibiting the sale of medicines to minors.

That’s according to the president's press service, Ukrinform reports.

Volodymyr Zelensky has signed Law “On Amendments to Article 21 of the Law of Ukraine ‘On Medicinal Products’ Prohibiting the Sale of Medicinal Products to Persons Under the Age of 14 (Minors)” No. 1668-IX, adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on July 15.

The document aims to restrict children's free access to medicines sold in pharmacies, and thus prevent possible accidents. Until now, drugs that pharmacies are supposed to sell on prescription could often be purchased without it.

The law prohibits the sale of drugs to persons under 14 years of age. This includes, but is not limited to, online sales and delivery.

If a person who sells drugs or delivers them has doubts about the buyer’s age, they must require a citizen’s passport or other document confirming their age. In case such document is not provided, the release of medicines to this person shall be prohibited, according to new legislation.

The law enters into force on the day following the date of its publication.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, on July 15, the Verkhovna Rada voted 341 in favor of Law No. 5122 “On Amendments to Article 21 of Law of Ukraine ‘On Medicinal Products’ on the prohibition of the sale of medicinal products to children under 14 years of age.”

The main task of the law is to prevent the uncontrolled consumption of medicines for purposes other than those prescribed.

The legal ban on the sale of medicines to children will allow the government to address the situation of uncontrolled abuse of medicines by minors at the state level and help reduce the number of suicides among children and adolescents.
