Mejlis calls on international community to force Russia to end war, hold it to account
This was reported by the head of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, Refat Chubarov, on Facebook, Ukrinform saw.
"On International Day of Remembrance of Victims of the Crime of Genocide, we call on the international community to take the most resolute measures to force Russia to end the war it has unleashed against Ukraine and to hold Russia and its citizens who committed crimes amid this war to account and prosecute them," he wrote.
Chubarov noted that Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, which has been going on for the 11th year in a row, bears clear signs of genocide.
"The atrocities committed by Russian occupiers in Crimea, Bucha, Irpin, Mariupol, Izium, Kherson, and other occupied territories, the targeted destruction of civilian critical infrastructure throughout Ukraine have all the signs of genocide," he added.
The head of the Mejlis recalled that on April 14, 2022, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Resolution "On the Commission of Genocide by the Russian Federation in Ukraine."
Chubarov emphasized that the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People will continue its systematic work aimed at officially recognizing the forced deportation of May 18, 1944, as a crime of genocide against the Crimean Tatar people.
As reported, the deportation was recognized as an act of genocide of the Crimean Tatar people in 2015 – by Ukraine, in 2019 – by Latvia and Lithuania, in 2022 – by Canada, and in 2024 – by Poland and Estonia.
Earlier, Ukrinform reported that the Czech Senate would consider in December a resolution to recognize the deportation of Crimean Tatars as genocide.
