Belgian expert says Belgium could become NATO’s main transit hub in event of war

Belgian defense expert Roger Housen made this statement in an interview with Ukrinform.

“The Belgian Armed Forces and part of the Belgian society will be to serve as a transit hub for the rest of NATO or some NATO member states. That's really great, and in the past two to three years, a lot has been done, but still we are way from everything that's really needed,” the expert noted.

In his opinion, it will take at least two years to complete the necessary tasks for effectively fulfilling such a role.

“That's about the infrastructure in the ports, infrastructure needed for being able to transit huge amounts of military equipment and personnel - that's the railroads, trains,” Housen added.

At the same time, he noted an increased awareness of the potential danger both within the armed forces and in society, “and this has already become a political issue.”

As reported by Ukrinform, Ukraine is giving Europe at least five years to strengthen its defense.
